In late 2018 I received an email from Froots, a Beijing/Shanghai Art Gallery, asking if I would be interested in creating a sculpture for a new hospital. It was in a large Chinese city that I had never heard of - Wuhan. The Tongji hospital aimed to use the power of art to achieve better treatment results.  Over the next few months I created sketches and concepts for a 6 meter (20 foot) tall sculpture at the site and solicited fabrication costs from Chinese sculpture fabricators.

By the summer 2019 I had been verified as the hospital's had chosen artist and we had settled on 2 different sculpture options. Then in July I was told that the project had been delayed.

When November rolled in I received an email from a Berlin/Beijing Art Gallery (Migrant Bird Space) inquiring if would I be interested in creating a large sculpture for a new hospital in China. As I got more details, I realized that it was for
Tongji hospital. Froots Gallery then emailed to say that another gallery was trying to undercut them for the project and to sever communications with the other gallery. I decided to sit tight and let the drama play out. Two days later Froots Gallery backed out and I began to deal with Eva of Migrant Bird Space. They had chosen my sculpture, KNOT#82 for the project.

After a week of back and forth with Eva and my attorney we had a signed contract. Migrant Bird Space had chosen a fabricator in Nanjing China and I verified their credentials. I began work on the model and in late December emailed digital CAD scans of my sculpture to Migrant Bird Space. Then I began to see Wuhan mentioned in the news and wondered “Why is Wuhan in the news?” I soon found out: the plague was on full force in China, the whole province was locked down. The project was put on hold.

In April the lockdown was lifted and work began.

The sculpture was installed in the summer of 2020. Getting good photographs of the finished sculpture took another few months.
